This historic site is named the British Landing because of an event in 1812, when a small force of British regulars, several hundred voyageurs, and Indian allies landed and occupied a height that overlooked Fort Mackinac and demanded its surrender. Today, it’s a starting point for some great hiking trails that run through the state park.
The first of its kind in Michigan, and the third oldest live butterfly exhibit in the United States, this renowned facility has 1,800 square feet of tropical gardens filled with hundreds of live butterflies from four continents, as well as insects from tropical regions around the world.

Located on the southwestern shore of Mackinac Island, Devil’s Kitchen is a much-visited cave within Mackinac Island State Park. Local legend has it that Native Americans believed the cave was inhabited by evil cannibal spirits. To this day, the cave is still blackened with soot, allegedly from the spirits’ cooking fires.

With over 70 miles of natural and paved trails, Mackinac Island is the perfect place to get outdoors. Bicycles are available for rent at Grand Hotel’s Pool House between 9:00 AM and 5:30 PM. Special Grand Hotel box luncheons are also available and can be enjoyed at any of the picnic spots throughout the Island.

Mackinac Island Airport’s 3,500-foot lighted, paved runway is capable of accommodating private and charter aircraft. The airport is one mile from Grand Hotel. Horse-drawn taxi service is available from the airport to Grand Hotel.
Experience Mackinac’s history and charm on a narrated horse-drawn carriage tour. Lasting approximately an hour and 45 minutes, it’s an enjoyable, authentic way to see the Island. With no set departure times, simply purchase a ticket at the office and you will be on the next available carriage.
Located along Garrison Road, the Mackinac Island Cemetery is adjacent to the Ste. Anne’s Catholic Cemetery and the military Post Cemetery. All three cemeteries are open to the public, and offer an opportunity to learn and quietly reflect on present-day life, as well as life dating back to the 19th century.

Passage to Mackinac Island is provided by a number of ferry boat lines, including Shepler’s Ferry. Registered guests of Grand Hotel receive a discount by using Shepler’s Ferry and can purchase tickets directly online or may show their confirmation at the ferry dock to receive the discount.
Once a burial ground but now part of the Mackinac Island State Park, this small, shallow cave is believed to have been the hiding place for English fur trader Alexander Henry during Pontiac’s Rebellion in 1763.
Overlooking Haldimand Bay, Round Island, and Downtown Mackinac Island, the Gazebo can be found along Anne’s Tablet Trail. It gets its name from the famous movie, Somewhere in Time, as Universal Studios paid Mackinac State Historic Parks staff to construct the gazebo so it could be used as a prop in the movie.
Star Line offers a variety of ways to journey to Mackinac Island, including a hydro-jet ferry and even a pirate ship. They also feature family ticket specials and cruises on the Straits of Mackinac.
Representing over 300 years of Christianity in the Straits of Mackinac, Ste. Anne Church serves the community and visitors of Mackinac Island year round. There is also an onsite museum and gift shop that offers educational, religious, and souvenir items.
The tallest limestone stack on Mackinac island, Sugar Loaf is a tower of rock that rises 75 feet out of the forest. Native American legend says that it is the dwelling of Gitchi Manitou, the Great Spirit.
Featuring fantastic vistas of the Straits of Mackinac and St. Ignace, Sunset Rock is renowned for its sunset views. It’s relatively hidden off a bike trail, just to the back-left of The Inn at Stonecliffe.

Play a historic round of golf on Wawashkamo, founded in 1898 and named one of America’s Historic Golf Landmarks by Golf Digest. Open to the public and one of Michigan’s oldest active courses, it seeks to preserve the unique character of the links-style golf course and grounds of the Battle of 1814 on Mackinac Island.
This butterfly conservatory features a unique variety of hundreds of butterflies, educational exhibits, an emergence viewing area, knowledgeable staff, and a gift shop, as well as outdoor crafts offered periodically throughout the season.
